So far, so good. I'm so glad that Steve's in his element managing this project. Coordinating everything - chainsaws, chipper, truck to pull the chipper, laborers, site safety - is definitely a challenge. Sometimes, things just don't want to cooperate.
The Chainsaw
The chain saw is the most important machine for clearing. Steve's old 20" Stihl needed some attention before hand, and worked well. He sharpened the chain and replaced a spark plug before starting. When the chain is sharp, meaning the teeth on the chain form a capital V shape, then the bits that it makes are big flakes. When it's dull, or pinched, meaning the tops of the V now touch, then it's less sharp, thus creating sawdust.
What Steve didn't know was that one of the guys was using the chainsaw. Hopefully he was being safe with it. Turns out he was not experienced with a chain saw, so the blade got pinched, and likely touched dirt. Chainsaws do not like dirt. Chainsaws also needs fuel, oil, and finesse with usage. It takes experience to know things like that. Steve eventually purchased a second chainsaw, a 20" Husqvarna. It was time to anyway.
The Chipper
Steve rented a chipper from Sunbelt. He says he'd rent from them again. The chipper worked well, until it didn't. A full day was lost because it stopped chipping. Steve called Sunbelt and they had a guy arrive within a couple of hours. The repair guy returned the next morning with the tools necessary to do an onsite repair, and got it working again. Because the chipper was down for a full day, Sunbelt extended our week rental for another day. Thanks Sunbelt!
The Truck
Steve's first plan was to use Lana (his old Range Rover) as the work horse for the site. Lana is in the shop, which is a whole 'nother long story. Steve had to rent a truck with a hitch from home depot, so he could get the chipper to its location on site. Renting the truck became a weird challenge by itself that resulted in Steve befriending the guy at the rental counter. You gotta do what you gotta do.
The Laborers
This is a shout out to Jonathan and Daniel. You guys worked diligently, and professionally. On time, hard working, all day long, rain or shine, no complaints. Outstanding work ethic.
The Blogger
Content creation does not come to me easily, however I am absolutely determined on sharing the process of building our house with you, through learning how to build a website about our house build. This video is my second with editing audio. I'm learning a lot!
