December Update

We paid a visit to the property recently to observe the direction of the winter solstice sunset, to reconfirm the best direction of the southeastern view and exposure, and to reconnect with our land.

Steve + Archer checking out the winter solstice sunset.

We've got our building permit, what's the hold up?

Short answer:

If there was no pandemic, Steve would have started construction immediately after the receipt of the building permit last spring. But there is a pandemic, resulting in ludicrous level inflation, which is the cause of delay.

Long answer:

We've been postponing our house build indefinitely since last spring impatiently awaiting the return of a more acceptable economical climate. We kinda thought the foundation would be done before this winter (winter being Steve's favorite weather for framing a house).

For example, the pre-pandemic price for concrete was $54,000. Steve re-priced the same job with the same company last August at $120,000. That's when Steve said (in his best construction worker from the Bronx accent) "You gotta be f*n kiddin' me! I can build an entire house for that."

Steve is considering some alternate options:

  • Renting the necessary concrete forms and pouring the foundation himself.

  • Purchasing the concrete forms instead renting them, for future build projects.

  • Pouring concrete himself in separate stages.

At this moment the material costs are trending down. Suppliers re-adjust their prices quarterly. Hopefully by the second quarter next year the prices will be more acceptable. We might be paying more than desired, at least it won't be ludicrous 🤞.

Hear ye! Hear ye!

There. It is officially said. Which means we have got to motivate. Time to focus on the details for the Finish Schedule.

Before you go, please enjoy a full one minute mini meditation from our land with us. We love this place and can't wait to live here happily forever after.

Thanks for stopping by!
