Establishing the Final Grade Level

Measure, re-measure, level, and square. To establish the final desired grade level, Steve constantly ensures that the grade is sited correctly and excavated properly.

The site has to be excavated to a specific grade height, and no deeper! Not an easy task when bedrock and boulders abound. It also has to be located exactly where the surveyor said it should be on the plans.

The site conditions require multiple steps within the footings... 21 to be exact. (That's a lot of steps.) Bahay Namin : : Our House is getting tucked in and nestled into a rocky mountain hillside along the Hudson River. There's nothing flat up on this mountain.

Workers with shovels cleaning up while Steve is digging with the machine.

Here are laborers cleaning up loose soil from the step footing locations.

There is a 5' overdig margin outside the perimeter of the building footprint to accommodate room for forming the footings and installing foundation wall forms.

It rained again last night.

Among Steve's complaints: the undesirable weekend weather pattern. There has been a tropical hurricaine rainfall every weekend for the last couple months. That creates one very cranky builder.

Beautiful fall day + very muddy site.

Next up:

  • Time to order lumber to form the footings.

  • Wait for puddles to dry.

  • Find laborers that work hard, are on time, and understand the job.
