Modern + Zen

Frank Lloyd Wright was a genius way ahead of his time. He believed that glass was like the mirrors of nature found in rivers, ponds, and lakes. Walls of windows are commonly used throughout his structures because of the way glass blurs the lines between outdoor and indoor living.

We are deeply inspired by his organic architecture style that unifies a building structure with its surroundings.

The exterior design is a contemporary concept with long lines, lots of glass, and a flat roof (for solar panels). Steve wants a lot of outdoor living space that blends well with the interior. All the glass will frame the big view toward the river. The home will be fully automated, thank you, Alexa. The house will be sustainable with our own well water, septic system, geothermal heating/cooling system. Solar panels will power the house. Then eventually Steve's future Tesla can be charged by solar. The ultimate goal is to live more sustainably and be more conscious of our environmental impact.

I'm drawn toward Zen design. The clean lines, minimalist, natural light, natural materials, and open spaces. Simplicity invites tranquility. I want the 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) of feng-shui to create a harmonious flow of energy throughout. Water features, maybe with fish, fireplaces everywhere, a long swimming pool for laps, hot tub for soaking.

The front view of the house shows two floors, due to the change in elevation. While the back of the house has three floors that are mostly glass. It's downhill and has the big view.

Read about the potential view in my post: We got a building permit

Steve played around with these different drafts for months. Erasing, re-drawing, re-imagining, etc. He's had lots of experience building Acorn Deck House Company homes. He is greatly influenced by their modern design. With his skills and knowledge, he can already envision the entire project clearly in his mind. Sadly, I cannot. I need extra help envisioning drawings of our house in 3 dimensions. So, we built a mini-model to help me better understand what is going on in that guy's head.

Check out the post on our mini-model of our home!
