Staircase Envy

We saw this stunning staircase a couple of times online, and we are obsessed. We love that spectacular tapering curve, the woodwork craftsmanship, it's a mono stringer and freestanding. It is an architectural engineering artistic masterpiece.

Image 1. Our favorite staircase.

Apologies for not having a link for the above screen shot, but I do have a link for this similar staircase below. I saw this one on Luxe Interiors + Design and grabbed this screen shot (and link).

Image 2. "Architect Mark A Silva worked with Skyhook Stairs & Rails on the staircase in the entry of a San Diego home. Bronze tread brackets were custom-made because "each has a different relation to the stair's curve," says Silva."

Aren't they very similar staircases? Yes, but not exactly. If you look at the top portion of the first staircase, it has this long triangular portion that tapers into the ceiling. Very elegant. The wood brackets for each riser matches the color of the wood spine of the mono stringer. "Same same" if you will. Steve loves the tapering part and the matching wood brackets because it adds to the overall dramatic grandeur.

The second staircase doesn't have the taper, so it appears chopped short. The brackets are bronze and less attractive. There are a couple more small differences, can you find them?

Check out these floating stairs by Bisca.co.uk It lacks that curve appeal (ha ha), but it does have that clean, airy, contemporary combination we are attracted to.

Image 3. Glass balustrades and open risers allow a view through the staircase to the garden beyond. The laminated balustrades form both structure and handrails to the stair. As a result, the staircase has a clean minimal appearance with a view around the living area.

Image 4. Floating treads never fail to impress. Bisca

What we like here in images 3 - 7 is the bottom steps are actually stacked feature platforms with a reveal to make it visually appear like it's floating.

The stairs in images 6 and 7 are the stairs in The Riviera by Metricon, a house in Australia that we are greatly inspired by.

Steve's motto is "I can build anything." Even though he has not built fancy free standing mono stringer staircase quite like these yet, he definitely wants to. And when Steve wants to build something, he finds the way.

The great room space will be the wood bending workshop needed to build these bad boys. Yes, two sets, upstairs in the great room and downstairs in the family room. Stay tuned!
