We're Stumped

This word has taken on a whole new meaning for me. When you see a tree, have you ever thought about what's going on below the earth's surface? Did you know that the root system of a tree can be 3 - 5X the diameter of the tree's crown? Here at Bahay Namin :: Our House, our land is actually more rock than dirt. Way more. Like, forty seven rocks for every one dirt, scientifically speaking. The tree roots here are basically fused with rock. Inseparable. See this stump?

This double tree stump is massive, and intimidating. Worth taking a picture of. Check out how much rock it is sitting on.

It is the largest one, probably about 3' in diameter. It is surrounded in rock. Steve is saving that one for when he has more patience.

Here's a photo of all the stumps we need to pull out.

Ninety plus stumps have got to go.

Allow me to present to you the list things we got to help remove stumps.

Item #1: An excavator with 3' wide bucket and hydraulic thumb.

Excavator 160G

The rocks laughed at this excavator.

Item #2: Steve asked for a hydraulic hammer. It arrived. How did it arrive, you ask?

Heavy ass hammer.

In the back of a white van. That's right. Sounds like pure fiction. Wish I had a picture of when the delivery guy asked Steve for some help carrying it. In true "Classic Steve" fashion, he replied, "I'm a strong guy, but not that strong." LOL!

Receiving the 3000 lbs. hydraulic hammer became a very strange side story. Clearly, someone did not think this one all the way through, Sunbelt. Three weeks later it was decided that the fittings didn't fit. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Item #3: Tractor Loader Backhoe with a 2' wide bucket.

Tractor Loader Backhoe with a bucket

Proved to be inadequate for pulling out stumps. The tires were too unsteady for the uneven terrain. It was sent back immediately.

Which brings us to...

Item #4: A second excavator, this time with a hydraulic hammer already attached.

Hydraulic hammer on the left. Screengrab from video of Steve hammering at a massive tree stump.

Having two big excavators seems to be doing the job. Steve is not going to let these stumps win.

Come back later to see the battle "Steve vs. Stump".
